Christopher Guest’s “Best in Show” is a wildly hilarious satire that pokes fun at people who are overly obsessed with their pets. So obsessed that they would take their pets and put them in a type of “beauty pageant” in order to get awards and recognition. It’s funny and unrelenting because you see it as an everyday occurrence in society. People like this really do exist, and that is why it’s so humorous. The characters are all out of their minds and are a joy to watch in this very entertaining and unpredictable film.

I had no idea what I was going to experience when I popped this into the DVD player. At first, it didn’t seem like anything that would interest me. However, almost every single person I know had seen it and encouraged me to watch it. I’m glad I did give it a chance, because I ended up really liking it. The satire is outrageous and subtle at the same time (something that’s VERY difficult to accomplish unless the project is in the right hands). The actors are hilarious and very animated, but at the same time you know that these types of people really do exist! Eugene Levy was my favorite person in the film. He’s so subtle and clever when it comes to humor. Overall, everybody was fantastic in their roles.

The DVD has some really cool extras. It has very good picture and sound quality. Extras included are deleted scenes, feature length audio commentary by Christopher Guest and Eugene Levy, theatrical trailer and more. The deleted scenes are pretty interesting to watch. Tons of special features for those who love the extra “bells and whistles.”

“Best in Show” is great satirical comedy in top form. Not a wasted second is present in the movie. If you’re looking for something a little less ordinary, this may be the choice for you. Christopher Guest has done an excellent job of orchestrating this very entertaining and clever film that gives us 90 minutes of fun and laughs.

This was a funny, funny movie, to say the least. I’ve never seen “Waiting for Guffman”, but “Spinal Tap” still makes me laugh to this day. My main attraction to this movie was Fred Willard(known lately for his hilarious “conversations” with Jay Leno on the Tonight Show). This man does wonders when it comes to improv, and this movie just displays that so well.

The film polks fun at Dog Shows(one event in which it’s participants take itself WAAAAAAAAAY too serious). This is best displayed when Fred Willard, playing a commentator for the show, asks his partner if he could guess how much Fred benched in his prime. Also to mention his hilarious anecdote for dressing up a bloodhound in a Sherlock Holmes uniform, in order to “get the crowd pumped”.

I liked this movie, and anyone a fan of mellow humor, rather than gross-out humor(Farrely Bros, etc.) should check this out. It’s more of a comedy for people in their 30’s and up, but I’m 15, and got a tremendous kick out of it. I won’t touch down on the characters, because I’m sure you’ve read plenty on that already. But, if your in the mood for one hell of a comedy, or just a plain old Fred Willard fan like myself, this is definitely worth a view.

I think this DVD is excellent. It is about Seto Kaiba firing all of his staff and testing out his new Virtual Duel Monster’s Video Game. He gets trapped and Mokuba has to save him. So Mokuba runs to Yugi and his friends. He asks for help and they agree to help. They go inside the Game and defeat some zombies. They come to a villiage and try to find Seto. They enter a contest for a card to get them across the desert. Mai Valentine helps and they get to a maze. Labyrthin Tanks chase them and at the end of the maze the Gate Guardian confronts them. Joey and Yugi use Black Skull Dragon and the card Dragon Nails to defeat the giant monster. They meet a girl that looks like Mokuba. They go to the palace to get food and advice. Mokuba is captured and is taken to the Witty Phantom. Seto Kaiba and Mokuba escape and soon meet up with Yugi, Joey and Mai. They get to the final level which is to defeat the Mythic Dragon. Kaiba uses Blue Eyes White Dragon, Joey uses Red Eyes Black Dragon, Mai uses Harpie’s Pet Dragon and Yugi uses Curse of Dragon. Mokuba has no dragon so the Dragon aims for him. Joey uses Red Eyes Black Dragon to block it. He get erased and later Mai and Mokuba get erased. Kaiba and the Pharoah use the Supreme Dragon Master Knight to defeat the Mythic Dragon and they beat the game. The Princess that looked like Mokuba turns into the Mystical Elf and revives the people lost in the game. They return home and Mokuba runs back to where Seto was. This DVD is one of my personal favorites and I definatly advise you see this one or you will be sorry!

Kaiba returns to his company to fire all of his people but they make some kind of excuse and offers to let Kaiba try out his new invention and Mokuba will activate it for him, but mokuba isn’t quite sure yet, Kaiba then beats a kind of dragon using the blue-eyes but the blue eyes gets defeated by a dragon capture jar capturing kaiba’s soul in his own machine!!!!!
Mokuba escapes and askes help from Yugi and his friends and they go into the game to except for Tea and Tristan, later, they soon meet Mai,(The undefeated champ) and then, Mai steals the prize Niwatori cards but the mad villagers are after them, but luckilly Yugi uses his Trap Hole and traps everyone, then they meet a Princess that looks exactly the same as Mokuba!!!!!!!!!!!!!
But then they realize that The Princess is gonna get kidnapped so mokuba makes a sacrifice and The Princess and Mokuba exchange clothes and he gets kidnapped!!!!!
Then Kaiba finaly wakes up and realizes that he was kidnaped by the Witty Panthom and says the only way out is to beat a lengendary dragon!!!
Somehow, Yugi, Joey, Mai and The Princess made it to the castle and they fight the dragon but they realize that they can only play dragon type monsters so Kaiba plays The Blue-Eyes, Yugi plays the Curse Of Dragon, Mai Plays Harpie’s Pet Dragon and Joey plays his Red-Eyes, but mokuba is defenseless and the dragon targets him! but joey makes a sacrifice and he uses his red-eyes and takes the hit! Joey runs out of life points and disappears, Mai is sooooooooooooooo angry that she uses Harpie’s Pet Dragon to attack!!!!!!!!!! but looses and she to gets erased, next Yugi asks for help from Kaiba but Kaiba refuses and the dragon hits mokuba and he too gets erased!!!!
Kaiba finally agrees and The Blue Eyes ULTIMATE Dragon and Yugi’s dark Ritual Soldier merge and have the unbelievable ATK of 5200!!!!!!! but can they beat the Dragon!!!???, this is one episode you sure wont wanna miss!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

This spectacle of colours and sounds is like a celebration of Bollywood with its crème de la crème cast and crew, and a story set in the Indian film industry spanning 30 years of classic and cult movies. As such, this film cannot fail to stir the hearts of most Indians and lovers of Bollywood, but its appeal can reach much further beyond its domestic arena because of its high production standards and personnel of international acclaim. The two most famous names in “Om Shanti Om” are Shahrukh Khan, one of India’s most talented and versatile actors, and the film’s scriptwriter, choreographer and director, Farah Khan, who has also earned many local and international awards for her outstanding productions. The two Khans (not related) have already worked together successfully on several big hit movies, and “Om Shanti Om” is yet another step along this fantastic journey into semi-fantasy, escapism and sheer delight for the senses. Although technically a Bollywood standard production of nearly three hours in length with about eight song and dance scenes throughout, “Om Shanti Om” is in fact many films in one as it embraces three decades of Indian films. A basically simple story is very effectively woven through this film industry history, mixing a tragic drama with the unreal world of show business while making fun of its own industry by overplaying the sentimental tones of many classic Indian films. For this reason alone, a general knowledge and feel for Bollywood would help the viewer to appreciate and understand these playful yet respectful tributes to Indian cinema. Yet the story itself already makes for general entertaining viewing, and the high-profile stars, brilliant music and choreography, as well as lavish sets make this film stand out from the rest.

The first half of the film is set in the 1970s, complete with garish fashions and cars, big hair and sideburns, and even nauseating Seventies wallpaper, as we watch a young studio extra trying to get closer to the beautiful, famous actress he is in love with, when suddenly tragedy strikes. But true to Hindu traditional belief, his soul is reincarnated that very instant into a newborn baby so that 30 years later – in our present day – when he finally remembers his past life, he can mete out justice and revenge on the evil perpetrator who took the life of his beloved three decades ago, but not without a nice little twist at the end. A lot of work went into making the sets, especially those with an authentic 1970s look and feel, and even the songs and music in the first part of the film are in the style of Bollywood’s Seventies films. Some Bollywood cult figures are also comically represented, but many are also internationally recognizable or are very similar to Western and Hollywood characters and movies, such as a parody of India’s Filmfare Awards: Bollywood’s Academy Awards, at which everyone who is anyone in Bollywood makes at least a two second appearance in their most typical and best recognized role or personality. For viewers not up on Bollywood’s Who’s Who, the second disc in this set might be helpful with nearly three hours of “the Making of…” complete with interviews, bloopers, deleted scenes, audience comments, interactive trivia quiz and much more, all with English subtitles. A nice, colourful booklet also has a brief summary of cast and crew which serves as a nice introduction to get acquainted with Bollywood, and the medium-sized, autographed poster of a bare-chested Shahrukh Khan in a sexy pose is also an added bonus in this set. In fact, in recent times the EROS label s been producing ever bigger and more lavish box sets with more bonus material, and “Om Shanti Om” is the biggest one so far, and therefore worth a little extra money. Watching this top-notch Bollywood production is like taking a fun ride at an amusement park with all its sounds and colours to create the perfect escape from the real world for a few hours, and then makes you want to come back for more.

If you’re any fan of Bollywood, OM SHANTI OM is sure to entertain the bejeesus out of you. This movie is joyful and extravagant and at times very funny. It tells of love and revenge, and of reincarnation and redemption. There’s also a bit of film industry spoofing going on. This is only Farah Khan’s second turn at directing (after Main Hoon Na, yet another must-see cinema), but she already shows signs of becoming a great director. Certainly she knows how to tell a story, although, to be honest, in this instance, the story is overshadowed by the spectacle. Despite some tragic and somber moments in the plot, OM SHANTI OM remains overwhelmingly a display of sheer, rowdy exuberance. It’s a party caught on film.

It’s Bollywood in the 1970s. Om Prakash Makhija (Shahrukh Khan) is a lowly, aspiring actor (or “junior artist”), whose resume, at this stage, consists of taking on gigs as an extra in films. He is seriously crushing on reigning Bollywood queen Shantipriya (Deepika Padukone), with whose billboard image he often converses. Om’s dream comes true one day when he gets to meet Shanti, and even ends up saving her life. But Om then stumbles on a secret which makes any notion of romance with Shanti an impossibility.

Things take a turn to the sinister when Shanti perishes in a fire deliberately caused by a shady movie producer (Arjun Rampal), and Om, in a desperate bid to rescue her, soon after passes away from grievious wounds. But, nearby, in fact in the same hospital, as Om takes his last breath, the baby son of a famous actor is born. And the baby’s name happens to be Om. You see where this is going, right?

30 years later, Om Kapoor (again Shahrukh Khan) has followed in his father’s footsteps and has himself become a celluloid superstar. But his priveleged status has gone to his head, making him into a spoiled and selfish brat. Om also loses some street cred with his underwhelming brand of cussing, which mostly consists of “Oh, fish!” And, mysteriously, he’s had a fear of fire all his life. Events unfold to at last make Om recall his past life even as he prepares to make a film, under the patronage of a shady movie producer (yes, that same one from 30 years ago). Then a bubblegum chewing girl named Sandy enters Om’s life. Sandy is a huge fan of his and bears a striking resemblance to Shanti. And, suddenly, Om sees a way in which his beloved Shanti’s death can be avenged…

Bow down to this blockbuster picture if you, in any shape or form, are hooked into Bollywood, and, specifically, into the 1970s Indian film industry. OM SHANTI OM is simultaneously a fond sendup and a wry homage of that wild and wooly era. For one thing, if you go way back to those days, then you’ll enjoy that bit of fun with 1970s actor Manoj Kumar (although, reportedly, Kumar himself wasn’t too enthused with all the ribbing). If you pay attention, you might even learn how Govinda might possibly have gotten his screen name. Myself, since I’ve started watching Bollywood only about two years ago, I’m sure many inside jokes flew by unrecognized, over my head and unappreciated.

OM SHANTI OM reunites Shahrukh Khan and director Farah Khan (MAIN HOON NA and other films), and these two are undeniably the wellspring of the film’s energy, enthusiasm, and vision. The general feel here is one of good-natured boisterousness, yet Shahrukh and Farah keep this ship steady and on course. The feel-good nostalgia is tempered by enough contemporary touches in the second half of the film, so that even the younger generations are kept engaged. Fair warning, though, if you haven’t seen any (or a lot) of Bollywood cinema, OM SHANTI OM just may overload your senses and sensibilities.

It’s near 3 hours long, and packed with many wonderful moments. As when Om first gets a chance to talk to Shanti but is so flabbergasted he can only make weird faces and funny noises; this, even as his voice-over reflects his elegant but unsaid responses to Shanti’s questions. Then there’s Om pretending to be a big movie star and then having to put on an act when Shanti comes to visit his set. And those are just two in a busload of memorable scenes. The film does tend to bog down post-intermission, but, still, the second half has its share of highlight bits. Unmissable is the whole Filmfare Awards sequence, which had me rolling on the floor and revealed what good sports Abhishek Bachchan and Akshay Kumar truly are. This is followed by an all-star afterparty as Om’s pals in the movie biz show up to help him celebrate (this is the portion of the film where you play “Spot that Bollywood Star!”). Shahrukh pokes fun at himself with the two suspiciously similar “movies” he’s nominated for in Filmfare. And, for the ladies, the musical number “Dard-e-Disco” showcases Shahrukh’s rockhard abs, which, rumor has it, he’d worked on for 3 months. Me, being a manly man, I shrugged at the newly buff Shahrukh (while bitterly drowning in envy, of course).

Oh, man, the sets, the sets, the opulent sets. I don’t know how much it cost to finance this film, but it was well worth it. The set designs are spectacular, especially the 1970s film studios, before and after the devastating fire. The awesomely garish costumes and hair styles simply evoke that era, even as you grin at the kitschiness of it all. Most of the songs rock, from the sweet “Ajab Si” to the hauntingly melodious “Main Agar Kahoon.” The wonderful “Dhoom Taana” is evocative of the tunes churned out back in the day (the song’s set pieces incorporate pirates, the cabaret, tennis and also, thru special effects, 1970s stars Amrapali, Jay Vijay, and Saccha Jhoota). “Dard-e-Disco” is an item number, with Shahrukh himself, abs and all, as the “item girl” on display (Farah Khan calls him that). The showstopper, of course, is “Deewangi Deewangi” in which 30 Bollywood big names pop in and boogie down with Shahrukh (”All the hot girls put your hands up and say Om Shanti Om…”).

It’s almost impossible not to have fun when you make a movie like this. The actors must’ve had a blast. More importantly, they were good. Deepika Padukone is a star in the making. This is the former model’s debut film in Bollywood, and she’s tall and gorgeous and is engaging as the sad Shanti and, later, as the klutzy Sandy. Also a former model, Arjun Rampal’s acting hasn’t impressed me in the past. But, here, as the conniving movie director Mukesh Mehra, he lands possibly his best role. He’s surprisingly effective as the villain, in spite of that tacky little foo-foo mustache. Kirron Kher is also memorable as the melodramatic mom. As for Shahrukh Khan – reliably over-the-top yet magnificent and poignant for all that – the guy owns this movie. Even in his goofiest moments, he never loses that charm. There’s a reason Shahrukh is one of the (if not THE) most sought after actor in Bollywood.

Eros International pulled out the stops with this dvd packaging, too. There are two dvds in this set, and they come in this oversized, very cool protective box. The first disc has the movie, the song selections, and the Director’s Commentary (taped while Farah Khan was lying in bed, 6 or 7 months pregnant). The second disc has 2 and a half hours of extravagant bonus features: the pretty thorough Making of OSO; the Making of the Songs (sorry, I always find this segment boring); the not-very-serious (and occasionally annoying) interview with SRK, Arjun Rampal, Deepika Padukone & Farah Khan; Bloopers; Visual Effects (interesting for the “Dhoom Taana” segment); OSO Events – worth watching for the Music Launch, the Fashion Show, the London Premiere, and the Special Screening (where you get other actors’ reactions); and an OSO Trivia Game. The best part (for me, anyway) is that most of this stuff is sub-titled in English. There’s also a booklet with Cast & Crew bios and a poster of Shahrukh and his abs and his autograph.

Bollywood hasn’t been exactly shy about producing movies with a reincarnation theme. But OM SHANTI OM may be the most buoyant and feel-good of them all, despite the dark supernatural element which creeps in. The plot, admittedly, is mediocre and rehashed, so we’re pretty much on automatic when it comes to the storyline. The fun, instead, lies in soaking in the nostalgia and the gentle lampooning, the glorious absurdity and even the friendly self-indulgence of the film. Then there’s also the tons of cameo appearances. Inspired by a warmth for the past and crafted with skill and heart and imagination, it’s very hard not to be swayed over. OM SHANTI OM is a celebration of Bollywood. And, really, why even fight it? Wallow in the film, man, wallow!

I love watching this movie with my 5 and 3-year-old kids. This is truely a fun and enjoyable movie for kids of all ages and even adults. Also this movie is very child-friendly with very little frightening scenes compared to Barbie’s first movie “Barbie in the Nutcracker”. Even the evil Gothel wasn’t that scary compared to the evil Mouse King. The picture quaility is very good, and the music is delightful. I’ll recommend this movie to everyone.

My under 5 year olds LOVE this movie. They find it spell binding and on rainy days they like this or just about any of the Barbie movies to go on. As an adult I find it one of the less entertaining Barbie movies, but it has some really good points to it.

It is one of the first of the Barbie movies and is set in the ‘fantasy’ world of the sevententh century, a time of magic and dragons. It is very very loosely based around the story of Rapunzel although the only real reference to Rapunzel is that she lives in a tower, has long hair and has a Rapunzel style dream sequence.

It is very fairy tale beginning – beautiful girl forced to do chores for a step-mother character – (who is ably voiced by Angelica Houston). I really like the animal sidekicks here – Penelope the dragon and Hobie the Hare who are her friends and allies in all things.

Rapunzel lives in isolation, working for Gottel, her stepmother, until one day by accident she discovers that not only are her parents not dead, but she can escape from the castle – which she does – ending up in a nearby village. There she meets a Prince and finds out that the prince and his father the king have been in constant battle with the neighbouring kingdom. She asks the simple question why – but it is answerable. Gottel finds out where she has been and imprisons her in a tower – but through goodness and friendship Rapunzel prevails.

What I really liked about this movie is the importance of friendship and love – which wins through in the end. This values honesty and good values in all things, including believing in yourself and your children, and being able to admit when you are wrong.

What I really like best is that Rapunzel wins through in the end – she saves herself, with some help from her friends, but she is the prime mover in her own fate and I think that is so nice.

There are some genuinely funny moments and I love some of the animation – the bit where Rapnuzel’s dress is changed by Magic is brilliant, and then watching it from outside the tower is a really stunning scene.

Overall I would have rated this movie as a 3- 3.5 simply because I find it repetitive and boring – the dancing barbie movies I enjoy much more like swan lake and Princess and the Pauper (which I love). However my Children adore this, and this movie is written for them – so 5 stars it is – we have had it about a year and the novelty hasn’t worn off yet.

“Quo Vadis”, based on the novel by Henryk Sienkiewicz would have to be near the top of my list of favourite 1950’s religious epic productions. Indeed “Epic” is the word to fittingly describe this mammoth MGM production that cost an amazing 7 million dollars to make in 1950 and was the studio’s biggest money maker since “Gone With The Wind”. It has everything an epic movie lover could desire, the already stated fine literary source, breathtaking sets (no computer generated effects here!), meticulously researched historical costumes, enormous crowds scenes and a stunning recreation of Pagan Rome at it’s height. The film boasts an extraordinary cast but towering over all of them is the late Peter Ustinov in his unforgettable performance as the deranged Nero. His interpretation of this infamous Emperor who began the first concentrated persecution of the early Christians is still the visual image for a lot of people, myself included,that first comes to mind when Nero’s name is mentioned. Already having been filmed a number of times in the silent era and once again since this 1951 film, this is still the definitive version of the story of the early Christian Church struggling to survive in Nero’s Rome after the great fire.

With the advent of television in the early 1950’s Hollywood fought back with splashy, lavish productions that could not be matched by the flickering black and white image of television in it’s infancy. “Quo Vadis”, lent itself perfectly for this purpose and an already shaky MGM put all of it’s resources into the filming of this elaborate production. The story centres around cocky Roman soldier Marcus Vinicius (Robert Taylor) who after three years of successful campaigning returns to savour the delights of Nero’s Rome. Detained at the villa of a retired Roman general Marcus falls for the simple charms of the general’s adapted daughter Lygia (Deborah Kerr) who unbeknown to Marcus is secretly a Christian. Seeing her love for him but not understanding the families belief in the love of a single god and in loving your fellow man despite their background or race Marcus has Lygia taken to Rome and placed in Nero’s “House of Women” and seeks to make her is own. Lygia escapes and is taken in by other believers but in the meanwhile Marcus finds himself the focus of the unwelcome and quite dangerous affections of the Empress Poppaea (Patricia Laffan). Meanwhile Nero’s meglomania continues to grow and he develops a wild scheme to rebuild Rome to his own glory and secretly sets the city on fire. The backlash from this act however sets Nero to find a scapegoat and thus begins the persecution of the Christian sect that are, to the amazement of the Romans, the disciples of a simple young carpenter from Galilee who was executed for his beliefs. Marcus finds Lygia however both are imprisoned together as Christian believers to become the sport of Nero’s festivities in the arena. The appearance of the Apostle Peter who has been called to Rome by Christ’s message gives the Christians the strength to endure their ordeals and Marcus and Lygia are married by him just prior to his own matrydom on Vatican Hill. Nero however goes too far in his persecution and the mob turns on him resulting in his fall from power and suicide and the reins of power being taken over by the more level headed General Galba.

While “Quo Vadis”, in some areas is not always accurate historically the faults are not glaring ones and it does give a vivid picture of the growth of the early Christian movement and the persecution it endured which of course went on long after Nero’s death. First and foremost it is inspiring and dramatic viewing and is the classic example of old style movie making at its most lavish. The film is filled with unforgettable images, for example the huge crowd scenes during Marcus’ triumpiant entry into Rome, and the burning of the city by Nero which incredibly was done on both full sized and miniature sets. The cold blooded destruction of the Christians in Nero’s Circus of course is probably the most vivid image in the film and is riverting in it’s horror and accurate depiction of people being eaten by lions or being used as human torches. These scenes in “Quo Vadis”, have I believe never been bettered in depicting the insanity and brutality of Nero and his regime. Performances are uniformily fine here. As the two lovers Robert Taylor and Deborah Kerr are just perfect as the two illmatched lovers from different worlds. Finlay Currie does a most inspirational piece of work as Peter and special mention must go to Patricia Laffan who is perfect in a chilling performance as the evil Empress Poppaea. Directed by MGM veteran Mervyn LeRoy, who was responsible for such diverse MGM productions as “Waterloo Bridge”, and “Blossoms in the Dust”, here he is still just as at home with this super scale type of film and his directoral integrity is evident in every frame of this film. “Quo Vadis”, ended up being nominated for 8 Oscars including Best Picture and Best Supporting Actor for Peter Ustinov.

I always find “Quo Vadis”, a moving viewing experience generally around Easter time when my thoughts often go back to the earliest years of my religion. Liking the older style of movie making I can also appreciate the film on its superb technical achievements and massive historical recreation. This however never submerges my appreciation of its very simple message that all people need to love each other despite their differences for the world to be a happier place. Take time soon to view this epic production of “Quo Vadis”, you wont regret it.

This biblical epic has Peter Ustinov giving the definitive performance of the emperor Nero, in spite of the motion picture code. But then, it seems they were always relaxing that motion picture code back in the 40’s and 50’s as long as it was for a biblical epic of some kind. In this case, you see – although from a distance – lions carrying the limbs of dismembered Christians upon which they are feeding, along with all of the other insinuations of decadence present under Nero. Robert Taylor, who was normally a rather wooden actor IMHO, did a very good job in this one as a Roman soldier entranced by a Christian girl. If you didn’t know better you might think this film was the work of Cecil B. DeMille, but instead the director was Mervyn Le Roy. Le Roy directed some of Warners fast-paced urban early sound films including Alice White’s musicals, Gold Diggers of Broadway, Cagney’s “Hard to Handle”, Edward G. Robinson’s “Little Caesar”, and “Three on a Match”. He also directed one of Robert Taylor’s other great performances in 1942’s “Johnny Eager”, unbelievably not yet on DVD. In other words, Le Roy directed many crowd-pleasers. This might explain why this film got seven or eight Oscar nominations, but none for the director himself. He just wasn’t considered good enough by the Academy to be “in the club” in spite of this excellent individual achievement.

Everyone knows the popular legend. Nero burns Rome to clear the way for the magnificent city he wants to build, but the peasants are revolting – literally. He then blames the odd and unpopular but quickly growing sect of the Christians for the burning, and begins feeding them to the lions for the amusement of the Romans. However, the Christians face death so bravely that Rome turns on Nero. Well, that’s the movie.

The facts are much more in argument. In an ancient city such as Rome, accidental fires that destroyed cities were common. In fact Nero did lead a massive relief effort after the fire, and fires just as large broke out in Rome after Nero’s death. Some historians do have the Christians confessing to the crime. The fact is that the people did begin to circulate rumors that Nero was at fault, and he was responsible for blaming th Christians for the fire to save himself. He ordered to have them thrown to dogs, though, not lions, as in the film. However, like Showtime’s “The Tudors” one can somewhat overlook all of this historical jumping to conclusions and outright inaccuracy in the name of fine entertainment.

This is a good adaptation from the book. After watching “Evil under the Sun” (1982) and “Appointment with Death” (1988) you naturally think of Peter Ustinov as Hercule Poirot. The whole movie is packed with great actors, yet even thought you recognize them they do not distract from the characters that they play.

I thought that it was a nice touch when the kids along the shore mooned Mrs. Van Schuyler (Bette Davis) as kids would do everywhere.

Simon (Simon MacCorkindale) and his new bride Linnet (Lois Chiles) are being perused by Jacqueline De Bellefort (Mia Farrow) the girl he jilted. Once onboard a boat going down the Nile bodies are dropping like flies. Everyone is a suspect. Everybody could have done it as we see the proof acted out. And yet nobody could have done it as all alibis hold up. Only Hercule Poirot can logically figure this out. Naturally as usual Hercule Poirot is in the right place at the right time to hear everything and extract the truth.

Evil Under the Sun

Hollywood was not always kind to Dame Agatha, but during the 1970s, they made some wonderful movies that were appreciative of her work. “Death on the Nile” is one of these. It is a clever murder mystery with the surprise ending that Christie is known for, but it’s not as appealing as some of the other films made of her stories.

Part of the problem is that the central character, who is the main murder victim, is a beautiful woman who cannot act. This means that though the movie has a wonderful cast of English and American actors playing the suspects, it has a leaden center. Contrast this with Diana Rigg, the victim in “Evil Under the Sun,” who is a wonderful actress who gives as good as she gets.

Also Christie admitted that when her stories started to bog down, she sometimes advanced the plot by throwing in additional murders. She does that here, and all this gratuitous death begins to get a little depressing. As many people know, Christie’s dashing husband left her for another woman, and many times after this, the victim or the murderer in her stories is either the other woman or the hero. She may have been feeling a little extra bitterness when she penned this story.

But you still have the wonderful characters, the exotic location (the movie is filmed in Egypt), and a very interesting murder with a surprise twist. I bought it knowing its flaws and I still enjoy watching it.

Peter Ustinov is not the Poirot found in Christie’s books, but the warmth and humor that he brings to the role actually make him better. Christie purist though I may be, I enjoy Ustinov in the role—even though he adds his own personality to the character, he is always respectful of Christie’s creation.

Once again Flicker Alley has done silent film fans a huge favor by compiling and releasing this DVD of two John Gilbert movies from different stages of his career. BARDELYS THE MAGNIFICENT dates from 1926 and reunites Gilbert with his THE BIG PARADE director, King Vidor. It’s a typical MGM picture of the day with lavish sets, smooth camerawork, and colorful supporting players. Gilbert, in an attempt to outdo Douglas Fairbanks, swashbuckles his way through this Rafael Sabatini story in grand style but Sabatini was no Dumas which is why I prefer MONTE CRISTO out of this set. I have always loved this story of the unjustly accused Edmond Dantes getting his revenge on those who wronged him even if takes 20 years. It’s also great to see another “lost” Fox film turn up. While it lacks the polish of the later MGM effort (it was shot in 1922 when Gilbert was 25), the film contains an emotional resonance the other doesn’t have and Gilbert gives more of a performance here.

Both films were reconstructed from incomplete prints which some may find a distraction but we’re lucky to have these titles at all so a big round of thanks to everyone involved for making it possible. The Mount Alto Orchestra provides a fine score for BARDELYS (there’s an alternate piano score by Antonio Coppola) while Neal Kurz’s piano score for MONTE CRISTO is an absolute delight as well. Rounding out the set are lots of supplements that include an audio essay for BARDELYS and a featurette REDISCOVERING JOHN GILBERT with Gilbert’s biographer (and daughter) Leatrice Gilbert Fountain who is now in her 80s. Like other Flicker Alley releases, this one is a must for silent film aficionados. Don’t let the price put you off. Remember, you get what you pay for (especially with silent film releases).

This beautiful 2-disc set by Flicker Alley is one of the year’s most exciting silent film releases, bringing us two outstanding films previously believed to be lost. Such a rediscovery is always exciting, but when it concerns a neglected silent screen legend and two of his best early films, then this set simply cannot be missed. Until now, John Gilbert has been remembered mostly as Greta Garbo’s co-star in several sultry and unforgettable silent films of the late 1920s such as “Flesh and the Devil” and “A Woman of Affairs”, at which time it was John Gilbert who received first billing in the credits. Rivaling Rudolph Valentino in popularity, it was after Valentino’s premature death that Gilbert attained the status Valentino held as the screen’s great romantic lover and hero.

It is therefore significant to see these two earlier films of another genre and style by this silent star whose brightness shone only briefly yet brilliantly, and I found his performance in both films surprisingly and delightfully refreshing and different. In the King Vidor production of “Bardelys the Magnificent” he rivals Douglas Fairbanks in his famous swashbuckling action-adventure, “The Three Musketeers”, with a similar setting and many exciting action scenes. It is a good story told beautifully with light humour which blends perfectly with the romance, suspense and adventure of the whole film. Although one reel is missing from this exciting rediscovery, the use of stills and extra intertitles fills the gaps nicely and does not detract from the overall smooth, stylish and sophisticated feeling of the film. An outstanding and perfectly-suited orchestral musical score by Rodney Sauer and the Mont Alto Motion Picture Orchestra enhances the quality of this already very satisfying Hollywood-style escape.

My personal favourite of the two films in this set however is the second film, “Monte Christo”, being one of many versions based on the ever-popular Alexandre Dumas novel, and of all the ones I’ve seen, this is by far the best, in my opinion. If not for the slightly inferior picture quality and a piano score instead of the full orchestral treatment, it would proudly stand on its own as a great film, ranking among the best early versions of The Count of Monte Christo. As Edmond Dantes, Gilbert goes through various stages of appearance, circumstances and emotions, showing that he was a competent actor in other roles besides romantic leads. The first half of this legendary tale allows Gilbert to play the role of the prisoner whose hair and beard have grown wild and long, desperately trying to find a way out and seek revenge on those who caused his unjust imprisonment. When he is rewarded with treasure and becomes the Count of Monte Christo, he again takes on a new aura and manner as he plots to ruin the lives of those who ruined his. It is a serious yet satisfying story told especially well for a silent film made in 1922, and greatly contributes to completing the picture of John Gilbert, the actor.

A top quality glossy brochure with many fine photos accompanies this set and provides more background information on the films and Gilbert himself, along with the audio commentary and half-hour documentary, which is basically an interview with John Gilbert’s daughter, Leatrice Gilbert Fountain, who wrote a biography of her father some years ago. All together, this is a wonderful set about a charming actor of the silent era whose films deserve to be remembered and enjoyed once again in this restored condition.

This video is unlike any others. Joe doesn’t go through all of the “routine” pieces as in other shows. There isn’t “mail time”. The clues are animated and actually sing and talk. Joe doesn’t actually “draw” these clues. The second video is “numbers everywhere” and it is really more of a high level preschool show. The counting is up to 100. My child was turned off without all of the traditional “blue’s clues” events.

For me, to have those on DVD, with Steve whom my 3 year old loves makes this DVD worth the price of admission. While Joe is pretty good, Steve has a quality that makes preschoolers feel like he is talking just to them! The ABC’s episode is fantastic for a three and up, as a 2 year old, it went above his head, and what they asked them to understand was too much, but now, on DVD he loved it and was able to participate right along — they need to recognize first letters of words maybe to truly appreciate it. The 123s episode is wonderful, teaches counting, addition, subtraction, more, haven’t even watched the Joe episodes in 3 viewings.

“High Plains Drifter” (1973) is one of the best and most original westerns of all time. It is also of of the best films that Clint Eastwood has ever made. It was only the second film that Eastwood ever directed, yet it is a western masterpiece, as it funnels all of the violent, harsh, and brutal images and themes that were first seen in the Sergio Leone spaghetti westerns (which made Eastwood an international star) into one picture. No other film blurrs the lines of good and evil like this one. No other film has humor that is so dark and so black. No other film tests and re-defines the nature of screen heroism, as Eastwood plays his darkest and most enigmatic character ever. This film strips the western to its most brutal, raw, violent, and merciless essence, revealing the old West to be a truly immoral and corrupt land. Eastwood’s compulsive, surrealistic imagery is both haunting and powerful, and it works in pefect tandem with Dee Barton’s eerie score. Filmed around Mono Lake, California, the hellish locations of the film add to its haunting atmosphere. The western town, constructed by Henry Bumstead out of raw wood is a classic, and helps to reveal the mean-spirited hypocrisy and vicious economic determinism of the townspeople. The film has an unexpected, spontaneous, and completely anarchic quality that eliminates the western’s typical predictablity and simple cliches. It is extremely challenging, unnerving, apparitional, allegorical, and curiously memorable. This is Clint Eastwood at his most daring and outrageous, as both an actor and director, testing the audience to see if it will support this most radical of anti-heroes. “High Plains Drifter” is my favorite film of all time, and it is not to be missed! In this classic western, Clint Eastwood performs admirably as producer, director and of course starring in the lead role. High Plains Drifter is an excellent tale that highlights Eastwood’s talents in this genre, whether it’s his “Stranger” type aura or the clipped but poignant lines. This great western has a superb script and exceptional performances by Eastwood and the other actors. Its surreal style, unexpected plot twists and great camera angles serve well to enhance this movies overall appearance. I do not normally comment on the soundtrack for films however, in this case I feel compelled to because I felt the soundtrack for this one is a perfect accoutrement to the overall feel of the movie!

The premise:

A lone stranger rides into town and is immediately set upon by some of the locals. Unfortunately for these rough locals, they’ve picked the star of the movie in Clint Eastwood to aggravate and they receive his quick six shooter justice for their efforts. The locals, being a cowardly bunch, eagerly set out to appease him in every way in order to secure his loyalty and protection from a group of criminals who are soon to be released from the territorial prison.

The “Stranger” agrees to be their benefactor and immediately sets out to do so in some strange ways. Through humiliation, misogyny and the threat of immediate “justice,” he begins to prepare the town for return of the criminals. As a surreal side note, the Stranger and some of the locals are having waking nightmares about the brutal killing of the former marshal by the criminals who are expected to return. What follows is a western that is one of the best and a benchmark for all westerns to follow.

I highly recommend this great Eastwood western to any and all die hard or casual fans of the genre or the actor. It is a classic western that deserves a spot on the DVD rack.

Special features:

Not unlike many of the other movies of the time, this one isn’t jam packed with special features because there just aren’t many to throw in. It does have a great trailer and some production notes that are quite interesting to read through on the screen. {ssintrepid}
